Myrtle Beach-A Long Way to Travel, But a Great Place to Visit!

by admin on April 20, 2011

After a very rewarding, but very tiring trip to Washington DC, we couldn’t have chosen a better place to recuperate than Myrtle Beach, SC.  No, we didn’t plan these trips very well—too close together, time-wise, and not-too-far-apart geographically!  We must have been asleep or stressed-out when we worked this all out, and it definitely had something to do with the RCI Wyndham Ocean Blvd. spacebanking where we grabbed 2 weeks for 56K. Actually, that probably won’t happen again, due to changes in the Wyndham/RCI policies (a future post will deal with all that), so maybe it’s just as well that we went when we did.

And did we enjoy Myrtle Beach?  Oh, yes! Now, some people might refer to the area as “tacky.”  Parts of it probably are, but those aren’t the parts that we go to or even think about—we think about waking up each morning to sunlit, white-capped waves and taking leisurely strolls on the flat, sandy beach while sea gulls cavort all around us.

We think about the great entertainment that the area offers, in the form of excellent, Broadway-type shows like The Carolina Opry, One, Legends, and Hooray for Hollywood. And, of course, there are fun things for families to enjoy like mini-golf, bungee jumping and all the water sports.  There are outlet malls, regular malls, boutiques and beach shopping stores galore!  There are also 2 large shopping complexes—Barefoot Landing, and Broadway at the Beach. The latter is the nicer of the two, complete with mini-amusement parks, carnival games, and Ripley’s Aquarium.

The ocean sets the scene for all kinds of wonderful cruises and fishing opportunities.  You can take dolphin cruises, shelling cruises, dinner cruises, sunset cruises and other types that haven’t been thought of yet.  We did a casino cruise, which turned out to be very enjoyable.  We’re not big gamblers, but for a total of $20 we enjoyed a lovely boat ride, a brunch buffet, some gambling time, and we also met some very nice people.  And, with the free casino money they gave us, we actually came out $6 ahead!

There are numerous restaurants and eateries, both chain and local.  As for burgers, there are 4 (count ‘em, 4) Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the area.  Actually, there are LOTS of burger places and probably even more seafood restaurants and buffets.  We ate lots of both kinds of food, and when we did ourtimeshare cooking,we ate lots of salads to make up for it!  Rest assured, if you visit Myrtle Beach, you will not go hungry!

Myrtle Beach is known as “The Golf Capital of the World”. There are many courses, although we’ve been told that it’s very expensive to golf there.  (We don’t golf at all, so don’t have a clue).  Myrtle Beach is also the home of “The Shag,” a dance that began in the 1930’s. In fact, one of the hotels close by was sponsoring an SOS (Society of Strand) major convention, so there was Shag music, and Shaggers everywhere.

Some interesting places to visit nearby include Brookgreen Gardens, with its many beautiful sculptures, and also Calabash, NC home to many seafood restaurants and an INCREDIBLE gift shop. Historical Charleston is about 2 hours away and makes for a nice day trip.  You can pick up a Plantation Tour along the way.

So, our Myrtle Beach vacation began on a very positive note, especially when we got our Wyndham unit assignment.  Look for our next post for more info on this great trip!
