Last month we spent a full week with the family in a two-bedroom and studio unit at Disney’s Old Key West in Orlando, Florida, and it was fabulous! All of the Disney timeshares are top of the line with great resorts, excellent amenities and great activities, especially for kids. Old Key West was the first timeshare that Disney built, so we were a little worried that it might be dated. We were wrong. They are in the process of doing updates on all the units and the ones that we were in had been redone and were very nice.
While we were in Florida, we visited all seven Disney timeshares and we were able to see rooms in 6 of them. We have also stayed at the Animal Kingdom Villas last year and we wrote a post which you can read if interested. It was a fantastic resort as well, and we would stay there again. Seeing the animals from your balcony was awesome. This background of staying and visiting the other resorts gave us the idea for this post.
First the units themselves: we found them to be very large and spacious. The two- bedroom we stayed in was a dedicated two bedroom unit rather than a lock-off. It had a very nice master bedroom with king bed, and a door to a large deck overlooking a lagoon and the golf course. It also had a jacuzzi tub and a sink located in one corner of the room. There was a door into the bathroom with another sink, a walk-in shower and toilet. Another door led to a large laundry room and another door into a long hall. So that made the master bath accessible without going through the master bedroom.
The second bedroom had two queen beds and its own full bath. It was also good size. The living area was large with a sleeper sofae, love seat, and large comfortable chair which made into a single sleeper. This chair sleeper made it possible for nine people to sleep in the unit.
A large dining table that we could seat 8 people around was located in one corner of the room. The kitchen was large and had everything one would expect or need. It had lots of storage space for all our supplies, as we did a lot of cooking on this trip. There was a sliding glass door onto our large deck with a nice table and four chairs. We used the deck often and ate out there on several occasions. This two- bedroom unit was the largest of any of the Disney timeshares that we were able to see and gave us a sense of space even with eight people. (Actually, only 6 of us slept here—grandma and our son occupied the studio, but spent all their waking time in the 2-bedroom unit.)
The studio unit was nicely decorated, and was larger than most of the other Disney timeshares that we saw. It came with two queen beds, a small kitchen area and the bathroom. It also had a small deck overlooking the golf course. As mentioned, we used this mainly for family members to sleep as they spent the rest of time in the 2- bedroom unit. It did work out well for us, as each person had a real bed, not a sleeper sofa.
The resort is large with some 65 building and over 700 units. The buildings are all done in pastel colors with most overlooking the golf course or bodies of water. They have four pools on site, with each having a playground. The main pool is the nicest, with a large slide, hot tub, sauna, small kid’s pool, and several lifeguards. We were closest to this pool, so we used it often and the kids had a blast.
The main check- in area had a nice lobby, complete with animal balloon creations for the kids. Papa’s Den is located here, offering a quiet place to read and talk, as well as Disney TV for the kids. The activity center sported lots of games and craft activities for young and old, alike. There was also a volleyball court, tennis courts, game room, exercise room, shuffleboard, general store, a restaurant and a small boardwalk deli. You could also rent bikes and boats at Hank’s. You could catch a boat, at no charge, that would take you to downtown Disney. We took the trip several times and it was most enjoyable.
In addition to the craft activities which our grandkids enjoyed immensely, they showed movies on certain nights, and hosted several pool activities and some evening campfires.
At all of the Disney timeshares they offer free transportation to all of the Disney parks. We did make use of this service and found it to be most helpful. They came at regular intervals and gave us front- door service to the parks.
The staff was excellent and up to the Disney standards. They were very friendly and most helpful. The resort had a family feel to it, as well as a relaxing ambience, which we enjoyed. We had an excellent family vacation and will return to this resort in the very near future.
